About Mike’s Music

Just Drifting Along with the Wind is my 3rd CD, and probably demonstrates my varied musical tastes more than my previous two.  The song "Just Drifting Along with the Wind" is a throwback to my early days when I would listen to the Sons of the Pioneers on my crystal radio set.  "What True Love Can Do" is a song that I wrote for my niece Shannon's wedding, and I was both pleased and proud to have been able to play it during her ceremony.  "Goin Nowhere Fast" is a song that was born out of the frustrations of a singer/songwriter constantly looking for gigs.  "Lonely Sailor" is a throwback to the songs of Tim Buckley during the late 60's, and "The Winter Blues Again" is one that I wrote while actually experiencing "the winter blues."  "Carrickfergus" is a traditional Irish song that I have always liked, and "I'll Carry Your Picture" is sort of a Peter, Paul, and Mary thing.  "It Must be Time" is a simple plea for the people of the world to get along a little better before the inevitable becomes reality.  As you can see, my approach to music is somewhat eclectic, and as such, it is my hope that you will find something you will enjoy.

In my second CD, "The Road Up Ahead", I have written several songs that have made an emotional impact on me. Tribute to Rick Nelson (He Was Once a Teenage Idol) is a song I wrote having seen Rick in concert only a few short months before his untimely death. The Ballad of Sarah Ballou was based on a Civil War letter from Major Sullivan Ballou the night before his death at the Battle of Bull Run. His body was never found. Annie McCarrick was written in one night after I saw a rerun of a 20/20 episode concerning her disappearance and death in Ireland in 1993. The other songs are compilations concerning the life experiences that we all have had at one time or another: from the daily struggle in There'll Be a Better Day to the lifetime commitment of I'll Always be There. I hope that you will find something you enjoy.

“Eventually” is my first CD, and as such many of the songs on it are reflective of life‘s journey.  After a career in teaching, I went back to my first love: writing lyrics and playing for live audiences, and “Eventually” was the culmination of these efforts.  Songs like “Just Along for the Ride”  embody the spirit of taking each day one at a time and the enjoyment of every little thing. The song “Eventually” is what it says:  someone who spent his life doing what he should, but finally getting an opportunity to do what he wants. “Electric Blue” is simply a metaphor for love, and its effect on one individual and his life. “Just Because of You” was written because without the other part of me, I wouldn’t exist. The song "1966" actually chronicles the mid-sixties in Spokane, WA when, in my youth, we would “tool Riverside”, the main drag in SpokaneWA; and like all kids my age, go looking for adventure. The other songs are composites of feeling and emotions that I have experienced over the years. I believe the songs speak for themselves, and I hope you find something you like.
